Impacted Canines (Impacted Eye Teeth)

Impacted upper or lower canines (eye teeth) are a frequently encountered problem which often requires a team approach between Dr. Anderson and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Upper eye tooth impaction occurs in approximately 2% of the population and is twice as common in females as it is in males. Canine impaction affects the upper teeth twice as frequently as the lower teeth. After braces have been placed on the teeth a simple oral surgery procedure is done. The surgery is done as an out-patient procedure under sedation. Usually there is only very mild discomfort post surgically and the patient can resume normal activities in a couple of days. The surgeon attaches a pad and small gold chain to the impacted eye tooth so Dr. Anderson may apply gentle pressure to the tooth by attaching an elastic to the chain. Over the course of a number of months the eye tooth is moved into its proper location.
